In the digital age, it can be difficult for museums to stay relevant without undergoing severe changes. While many people find the idea of being so close to historical and important artifacts fascinating, they often find museums inaccessible, disengaging, and overwhelming.

Buzzword of the Year

In 2011, when gamification was largely introduced, people leaped to incorporate it in their museums to drive traffic and enhance the visitor experience. However, not a lot of museums got it right.

 

With the idea of gamification being relatively new and growing, many museums understandably fell into various traps—focusing on things like games, points, and rewards being a common pitfall—that lead to large costs and little added benefits. As a result, museums still have significant underexploited potential that can and should be used to promote education and provide a better learning experience for visitors.
